SYSTEM TO MEASURE CSR EXCELLENCE TO BE DEVELOPED FOR 5 EU MEMBER STATES

Bratislava, Slovak Republic, 22 January 2010 - The United Nations Development Programme will assist new European Union member states take better advantage of the private sector, thanks to a socially responsible business initiative. Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Slovak Republic will participate in the programme, which aims to measure and assess socially responsible businesses (also known as Corporate Social Responsibility-CSR). In the selected new EU member states, the project will help establish more socially responsible businesses, and help the countries make strides toward the business environment in existing EU countries.

COMPANIES ASPIRE TO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

A study of 288 companies across eight new European Union and candidate countries by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reveals that multi-national companies -- not consumer groups -- lead the way in social responsibility.

Brussels, 26 June 2007—The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) presented here today the first comprehensive regional study of the private sector’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) in eight Eastern European countries:  Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia and Turkey.  The study is based on interviews conducted with managers in the participating countries. The research covers service and manufacturing sectors, including finance, extractive, chemical and agri-business. Forty-eight percent of the respondents represent local private businesses, 35 percent came from multinational enterprises, and 17 percent were from state owned companies.

FIRST REGIONAL  PROJECT LAUNCHED BY  UNDP TO ACCELERATE IMPLEMENTATION OF CSR IN 8 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is launching the first regional project aiming to promote and support the integration of sustainability principles into the business strategies.  The Project is expected to contribute to regional cohesion among old and new EU Member States and candidate countries. The project is funded by the European Commission.
